The Gold Eagle – A Timeless Treasure

The 1 oz American Gold Eagle BU is America’s first official gold bullion coin. In fact, 2025 marks the Fortieth anniversary of President Reagan signing the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 that authorized production of the Gold Eagle. As the bill defines, the $50 Gold Eagles are minted from one troy ounce of .9167 fine gold. 

The obverse of the coin displays Augustus St Gaudens iconic Lady Liberty design from the $20 Gold piece issued in the early Twentieth Century. St Gaudens was commissioned by President Teddy Rosevelt to redesign both the Ten- and Twenty-dollar gold coins. His Lady Liberty design is considered to be the most gorgeous gold coin ever issued by The Mint. This is a classic image, with Liberty striding forward with the rays of the Sun radiating in the background. This is a symbol of American freedom and strength. 

From 1986 to 2021 the reverse of the coin displayed a nest with a family of Bald Eagles. In mid-year 2021 the image was updated to a portrayal of a majestic Bald Eagle close-up.
